Help Screen

\HANDSON\HELPSCRN Magic Folders (shareware) hides directories under DOS, Win3.x and Win95. The hide/unhide dialog is password-protected. Handles multiple users. Not compatible with 32-bit file access under Win 3.11, or with NT. Excellent security measure, and doesn't rely on easily cracked file attribute changes. If you want extra security, the authors have more programs in the same line, including a version of Magic Folders which encrypts information. Full details at http://www.pc-magic.com.

More Properties (freeware) offers stacks of configuration options under Win95/NT 4. In addition to the files supplied, More Properties requires the following: COMCTL32.OCX, MFC40.DLL, MSVCRT40.DLL, OLEPRO32.DLL, VB40032.DLL, VEN2232.OLB. Most people will have these already. In case you haven't, there are copies in \HANDSON\HELPSCRN\MOREPROP\SUPPORT. Copy them into \WINDOWS\SYSTEM but only when you're sure you need to, and don't overwrite versions already there!

Directory Catalog (limited demo) calculates checksums for all files on your disk, and displays hidden information about them.

HSCRNNET.HTM is our file of useful Internet addresses, mainly manufacturers' own sites where you can get tech support and updated software. Load it into your Web browser (usually from File, Open) and click the appropriate link.

TEST.DBF is a dBase-format file used in a mini tutorial on Word's mail merge feature.

WIN3HLP.HLP is a help file which contains most of the Windows 3.x-related material we've published in Help Screen over the last year or so. The file lags behind recent issues, but will be updated in the near future. We said that last month, but it's fiddly to add new sections to big bitty help files. Ian is working on a system which is easier to update.
